Masks

I'm covered.

My face is covered.
My facial expression is covered.
My emotions are cover.
My nose is covered.
My breath is covered.
My mouth is covered.
My voice is covered.
My language is covered.
The words are covered.
The news is covered.

People are covered.
Death is covered.
The truth is covered.

These sculptures are part of the drawing project — Miscommunication: The Facemask.

Due to the COVID-19, masks became my daily necessity. When I’m wearing a mask, my nose, mouth, and face are covered. My breath, voice, and facial expression are also hidden. Mask is protecting us from the virus, but it is covering all the information, expression and communication. Therefore I decided to express myself by writing my thoughts and emotions on the mask. The message is written in Cantonese which is my first language. The words are fractured and tied back together. The reconnected words no longer contain meanings. The process of separation and reconnection is revealing myself while concealing the message, just like the experience of communicating with people while wearing a mask, and people can only hear fragments of the conversation or just some muffling sound.
